This dubbing twister is a short weighted shepherd's crook. A loop is formed in the tying thread around the shepherd's crook then secured to the fly hook by wrapping back. Dubbing is inserted and distributed inside the thread loop. The tool is then spun and the dubbing is locked into the thread wraps. The resulting body is very durable. It may be trimmed or teased to exact shape or left as is. Be creative. Fly tying is a form of sculpture. ...

Many fly patterns require hair that is perfectly even at the tips. Most hair grows on animals in random lengths. A stacker enables you to bring all of the hair tips to the same plane quickly. Just insert the hair bundle tip-first into the barrel of the stacker and bang the base of the stacker on the table. The hair fibers will slide until they stop at the bottom of the stacker. Turn the stacker horizontal and remove base. The exposed hair tips will be even. Remove the evened hair bundle from...

Round rubber legs are popular additions to nearly every category of flies. Nymphs, wet flies, saltwater flies, bass bugs, and even some tiny dry flies for trout sport rubber legs. Recently, rubber leg material is even showing up on the newest steelhead and salmon patterns. Rubber leg material has been around since the early 1940's. At that time, it was made by slicing a sheet of thin latex into narrow strips. The only colors available were black and white. These thin square legs were fairly...

Spiky rabbit fur guard hairs combined with trilobal Antron fibers which act as a binder and add extra shine. Most of the guard hair fibers are coarse, slick and tapered. This is some of the buggiest dubbing ever invented for tying wet trout flies and nymphs. The natural hairs are mottled tan to black shades. Dyed colors retain this mottling. The color swatches given below are an approximation of the overall shade.

This is a mix of hare's ear dubbing and micro rubber legs. This type of material was made popular by Doug Swisher. He uses this to created wiggle buggers and nymphomaniacs, two very successful Montana trout patterns. Hare's Wiggle Dub is easiest to use when twisted in a loop of thread, then picked to expose all of the rubber "legs". After the dubbing is wound on the hook, tease it again to expose all the legs and hair tips. This technique produces flies with lots of active, crawly motion. ...

A fly that employs a cone head for weight is streamlined and comparatively easy to cast. Usually these flies will sink slightly faster than the fastest sinking fly line. This is a distinct advantage when fishing for salmon and steelhead holding deep in cold water. Cone heads are easy to tie and can be added to a tube fly either before or after the rest of the fly is constructed. Melt the front of a plastic tube so that it swells and holds the cone in place. These "large bore" cones fit over...

The junction tubing is usually cut into 3/8" to 1/2" lengths. Each is then slipped over the rear end of a tube fly. The hard tube is inserted into the soft tubing so that it takes up half of the length of the soft tubing. A straight eye hook is inserted into the other half of the tube, eye first. This junction tubing must fit the fly tube tightly as it is held in place by friction.

Looking at the picture of the bird makes you wonder what natural selection could have evolved such a gaudy specimen? Yet when you look at the bird or it's feathers on this page, you are seeing the feathers against a monotone background to make them stand out for display purposes. When you view these same feathers on the bird in their natural colors against a natural deep forest background the stripes and bars break up the form of the bird like stripes on a tiger. This train of thought gets...
