Newer foam patterns are often over fished to the point where fish become educated to the larger, bulky profile. They will move for it, but stop just short and refuse it with a quick flash back to the bottom. Later in the season, or as a follow-up to the described refusal, a slimmer, more natural...

Travis Johnson: "Well sometimes even your pet can be a muse. I named this fly after my yellow lab Henry (Hank for short). He is a wild, high energy, free spirit. I wanted a sparse fly that would produce its own background. (The flash in the wing really gets it done.) The classic steelhead colors of purple and chartreuse can't really ever be beat. The elongated butt with a veil over it provides great visual stimulus for the steelhead. I like to believe that the last thing the steelhead sees...

Travis Johnson says of his Outlaw Fly: I like tying steelhead flies, a lot. I also love looking in peoples steelhead fly boxes. I am not afraid to try something new for steelhead either. With all that in mind, I developed this fly for the purpose of minimal zing body materials to allow focus on the wing and the tail. In the case of the ?Johnson?s Outlaw? I use arctic fox in a bit fuller wing with the idea that it would provide its own background. What really happened was exactly that, but it...

Claret or wine colored flies have had a place in the color spectrum of anglers around the globe. I first started noticing the effective nature of this color about nine years ago. I had two different groups at different times throughout the summer steelhead season that were doing rather well. The first fished a classic Irish pattern called the "Irishman's Claret." This simple but eye catching fly seemed to shine, even when fishing was tough. The other group had an adaptation of a "Fiddle D," a...

Item #: 37-1120-04 -

The Steak and Eggs was designed by Travis Johnson. He claims the design was inspired by fishing late season summer steelhead of the Columbia Basin. As a guide on the Deschutes for the last 8 seasons, Travis has spent a lot of time seeing what entices fish to the fly. The egg off the back of a light weight intruder is super effective. Also if you're in the know on tube flies, the egg can be changed to fit either the angler or the conditions. This has also been a great Alaska pattern. The...

Jumbo Critter Jumbo Critter

Availability: In Stock 1-2 day
Item #: ST073 -

This is what Bjorn Beech says about the Jumbo Critter series: "This pattern originally belongs to the late Wally Bolger. I cleaned up the edges by spinning the hair a little sparser and more evenly around the shank creating a fly limited in size only by the length of hair used. I've tied this fly from little 1-1/2" summer run steelhead patterns to 6" long monster king versions. A combination of sparsely spun hair and a pheasant tail collar gives us a big loud wiggly pattern. Major benefits to...

Ka-Cudda FlyThis fly comes complete with 12" of stainless steel bite tippet attached to a super-sharp black-nickel plated 2/0 hook. Ka-Cuddas are a little over 7-inches long, but are extremely lightweight and are easy to cast if you use the right outfit. They may be fished with either floating or sinking lines, But the best method is to use a RIO Outbound line with a 15' clear tip. I use a very short level #40 fluorocarbon leader (no more than 3-feet). It helps if you coat the line tip with a...

Kriller Steelhead and Salmon Flies "The Killer Krill, or Kriller Series, was conceptualized and constructed on western Alaska’s Kanektok River by Alaska West guide, Greg Houska. Starting as a tube fly in June, the Kriller effectively found it’s way to being tied on a shank by August. After a full season’s worth of tweaking, trial and error, and most importantly peer review from creative fellow guides, it became ever more productive. Item #: 176 -

As tied by: Pat DorsyThis is a very effective redfish fly in various conditions. Because of the basic shape of it's body, it makes a good crab/shrimp/gobie/blennie imitation in shallower water. Unlike most crab imitation flies this fly is also productive when stripped as a streamer for blind casting, or fishing to cruising reds.
